David Beckham has been given the official role in the Olympic opening ceremony. Although the former England captain wouldn't give up any details, he did state that he felt ‘honoured’ and ‘proud’ to become involved in the ceremony. London 2012 chief Lord Sebastian Coe jumped in the chance to include Beckham following the footballer’s surprise omission from the GB football squad. “David continues to be an extraordinary supporter,” Lord Coe said.
The previous England footballer confirmed he will have a part within the ceremony after he met sporting great Muhammad Ali in the Beyond Sport summit in London.
The outlet ceremony is expected to have a final torch relay within the stadium, as has happened with all of recent Olympic Games, having a number of sports stars, former Olympians yet others selected for their contribution towards the London Games carrying the torch prior to the flame is lit.
The outlet ceremonies are often the wedding event on the Olympic calendar. 4 years ago, the Beijing Olympics took the outlet ceremony to another level, creating arguably probably the most jaw-dropping opening ceremony of all time. This can lead to pressure for London because they will try to somehow compare to, or top, what Beijing did in 2008.
David Beckham has slammed the choice to leave Sir Paul McCartney from the Olympics opening ceremony. McCartney was overlooked of the line-up last month after film director Dannie Boyle didn't pick him among the musicians aged over 60. Former England football captain Beckham has urged Boyle to possess a list-minute rethink and include McCartney on stage.
"He's a national treasure. I would've thought McCartney could be first choice due to his huge contribution to British music," Beckham told Shortlist. "But some idiot decided otherwise. Personally i think a bit sorry for that three over 60s, because we will be looking at them and saying, 'That should've been McCartney'. He's a national treasure, a crowd-puller."
“David continues to be an extraordinary supporter - probably our number 1 supporter - from the Games from the beginning and is keen to carry on his enthusiastic support to the end. He is from East London and knows how important the Games and sport will be to young people. He is an excellent role model.”
Beckham told The Associated Press, “It is a few kind of role within the opening ceremony, which I am honored to become involved in because obviously I had been involved in the start process with this particular seven years ago.”
He might kick a ball about, or he might hold the Olympic Torch, like he already did if this arrived at Lands End at the beginning of the relay back.
Becks was already surprising people in the Olympic Photo Booth alongside Olympic Park at Westfield Shopping Centre.
