The Gong Li-led jury of 17th Shanghai Film Festival awarded Greek film "Little England" the very best prize and two other nods. Winning the coveted Golden Goblet Best Film prize, the time drama also won through its lead star Pinelopi Tsilika and director Pantelis Voulgaris.
The Jury Grand Prix went to The Uncle Victory, directed by China’s Zhang Meng, a film which was mired in controversy earlier within the week when it emerged that certain of its stars, Huang Haibo, had been convicted to have sex with a prostitute. The film wasn't shown to press or public and questions regarding the lack of screenings weren't answered at a SIFF press conference.
Based on Ioanna Karistiani's 1997 bestseller novel "The Jasmine Isle", "Little England" is really a family saga spanning two decades in the lives of two sisters, united and divided with a terrible secret - their passion for the same man. "The feelings portrayed within the film - love, separation, loneliness - are timeless. Each one of these emotions have always been a component of the world of cinema," Voulgaris said.
The awards were passed out during a red carpet ceremony on Sunday, June 22 in the Shanghai Grand Theater. The jury also awarded Jury Prize to "The Uncle Victory" which became controversial after its lead actor Huang Haibo was convicted to have sex with prostitute. The Chinese film wasn't shown to the public but was privately screened for that jury.
The festival closed using the official world premiere of Transformers: Age Of Extinction, which has Chinese co-producers and cast including actress Li Bingbing. RealD provided the 3D projection and glasses for the screening.
Haibo was tipped to become a favorite to win the best acting prize however it eventually went to Thailand actor Vithaya Pansringarm from "The Last Executioner".
