Tom Cruise is suing an american magazine for $50m (£31m) on the cover story which claimed he’d abandoned his six-year-old daughter Suri.
Inside a statement, Cruise’s lawyer Bert Fields known as the claims in a July edition of Life & Style magazine“a vicious lie”.
“Tom is really a caring father who dearly loves Suri,” he added.
Cruise and Suri’s mother, actress Katie Holmes, divorced come july 1st after six years of marriage.
“She’s part of his life and try to will be. To say he’s ‘abandoned’ her is a vicious lie. To state it in lurid headlines having a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible,” said Mr Fields.
The weekly magazine’s issue on 30 July featured an image of Suri sobbing around the front cover, combined with the headline: “Suri in tears, abandoned by her dad”.
The legal papers, so it had seen, noted the storyline inside the magazine didn’t repeat the “abandonment” claims.
Instead it explained that Suri was really in tears within the photo after not being able to take a puppy home from the pet store.
However, it claimed the entire story “would not be seen through the vast majority of people who saw the cover” if this was on display in stores.
Under the terms of Cruise’s divorce, Suri currently lives in Ny with her mother, while Cruise has extensive visiting rights.
The actor’s lawyer denied that Tom Cruise desired to make money from the lawsuit, saying he just really wants to clear his name.
“Tom doesn’t go round suing people. He isn’t a litigious guy,” said Mr Fields.
He added: “But when these sleaze peddlers come up with money with disgusting lies about his relationship together with his child, you bet he will sue.”
The lawyer asserted if successful, Cruise would “undoubtedly provide the money to charity”.
Bauer Publishing, which produces Life & Style as well as in Touch magazine, which published similar claims, hasn’t yet commented around the legal action.
